I’m A Personal Stylist – Here’s 18 Things Most Women Get Wrong About Their Body Shape

Partilhar é cuidar!

As a personal stylist, I’ve helped hundreds of women transform their wardrobes and boost their confidence. One thing I’ve noticed is how many of us misunderstand our own body shapes. These misconceptions often lead to clothing choices that don’t flatter our natural silhouettes or make us feel our best.

1. Forcing yourself into one body type category

Most bodies are a blend of multiple shape categories. You might have hourglass proportions with apple tendencies, or pear characteristics with rectangular elements.

Embracing your unique combination leads to better style choices than trying to fit perfectly into one box.

2. Dressing for someone else’s body

Celebrity inspiration can mislead you. What works on a 5’10” model with a rectangular frame won’t necessarily flatter your 5’4″ hourglass figure.

Focus on real-world examples of stylish women with proportions similar to yours instead of celebrity looks.

3. Hiding your curves instead of celebrating them

Loose, shapeless clothing often makes curvy women look larger, not smaller. Strategic tailoring that skims your curves creates a more flattering silhouette.

Define your waist with belts or fitted sections to showcase your natural shape rather than drowning in fabric.

4. Believing vertical stripes always slim

The width and spacing of stripes matter more than direction. Thin, widely-spaced vertical stripes can actually widen your frame instead of lengthening it.

Consider scale too – larger bodies often look better in medium-width stripes rather than skinny ones.

5. Wearing the wrong bra size

An estimated 80% of women wear incorrect bra sizes! This creates unflattering silhouettes and can make clothes fit poorly across your entire upper body.

Get professionally measured annually – your true size might surprise you and transform how tops and dresses look.

6. Ignoring proportion in outfit planning

Balancing your top and bottom halves creates visual harmony. If you’re pear-shaped, adding volume or interest up top balances wider hips.

Think of your outfit as a complete picture rather than separate pieces. The relationship between elements matters more than individual items.

7. Misunderstanding your vertical proportions

Many women focus only on width, ignoring whether they’re short-waisted, long-waisted, or have shorter legs relative to their torso.

Knowing your vertical proportions helps determine ideal hem lengths, where to place belts, and whether high-waisted or low-rise styles flatter you best.

8. Buying clothes that don’t fit your current body

Holding onto “someday” sizes keeps you stuck in a negative relationship with your body. Dress the body you have today with love.

Well-fitting clothes for your current shape look infinitely better than too-tight items from your past or aspirational future sizes.

9. Thinking black is always slimming

Navy, chocolate, plum, and charcoal often create a more flattering slimming effect than harsh black, especially as we age. These rich tones add dimension while still streamlining.

The cut and fit of a garment impact its slimming properties far more than color alone.

10. Overlooking the power of tailoring

Even inexpensive clothes look expensive when properly tailored to your unique proportions. Most ready-to-wear items are designed for an imaginary “average” that rarely exists.

Budget for alterations when shopping – perfect fit transforms everything from jeans to blazers.

11. Wearing prints that fight your frame

Scale matters tremendously with patterns. Petite women often disappear behind large prints, while tiny patterns can look busy on larger frames.

Choose print sizes proportional to your body. The right scale creates harmony rather than visual competition with your natural shape.

12. Misplacing your waistline

Your natural waist sits at the smallest part of your torso, usually above your belly button. Many women mistakenly place belts or waistbands at their lower abdomen.

Highlighting your true waistline creates the most flattering silhouette, regardless of your body shape.

13. Choosing the wrong rise in pants

Pants rise dramatically affects your perceived proportions. High-rise styles lengthen legs for short-waisted women but can awkwardly compress long-waisted figures.

The ideal rise should create visual balance between your upper and lower body, not cut you at your widest point.

14. Dismissing shapewear as uncomfortable or outdated

Modern shapewear isn’t your grandmother’s girdle! Today’s options smooth without squeezing, creating a clean foundation for clothes to drape beautifully.

Lightweight, targeted pieces like smoothing shorts or seamless bodysuits can transform how garments fit without discomfort.

15. Choosing necklines that fight your face shape

Your face shape and neckline should complement each other. Round faces gain definition from V-necks, while angular faces soften with scoop or cowl necklines.

The right neckline frames your face beautifully and can even create the illusion of a longer neck or more balanced features.

16. Letting height dictate all your choices

Petite doesn’t automatically mean you can’t wear midis or maxis. Tall doesn’t mean you must avoid cropped styles. Proportion matters more than arbitrary rules.

A petite woman can rock a maxi dress with the right waistline definition and shoe pairing.

17. Assuming you can’t wear certain colors

While undertone matters, most women can wear any color with the right shade and placement. “I can’t wear yellow” usually means you haven’t found your perfect yellow yet.

Experiment with different intensities and placements – sometimes your challenging color works beautifully as an accessory.

18. Misunderstanding your shoulder width

Shoulder proportion relative to your hips determines much of your body shape. Many women mistake themselves for pears when they actually have balanced shoulders.

Stand in front of a mirror in fitted clothing and objectively compare your shoulder width to your hip width for clarity.
